Jared Horn, RHP, Vintage HS (CA)

As a California native and former USC assistant coach, new scouting director Randy Flores almost certainly had more exposure to the amateur talent in California than in any other region prior to starting in his current position last summer. Flores might be wise to draw on that experience in the first round and take Jared Horn, a high school righty from his home state.

The 17-year-old Horn already sits in the mid-90s with his fastball, and he’s got a curveball, slider, and changeup that could all be effective pitches once he gets more time to develop.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pounder will need to be talked out of his Cal commitment, but he’s very reminiscent of another young Cardinals righty who was taken at the end of the first round from California, Jack Flaherty, and he’s an under-the-radar possibility at pick 33 or 34.
