The St Louis Blues will face the Chicago Blackhawks on January 2. Because it is always the Hawks.

It was originally a Stadium Series game, but the St Louis Blues will be hosting the Winter Classic next season. The St Louis Blues will be the eighth team to host a game in the series, and the Blackhawks will be in their third such game. The game will follow the Centennial Classic game in Toronto on January 1. That game will feature the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Montreal Canadiens.

More from St. Louis Sports

St Louis Blues owner Tom Stillman, Cardinals president Bill Dewitt III, and Blues great Brett Hull stepped out onto the ice, shouting “The Winter Classic is coming to St Louis.” Busch Stadium has been a projected site for years, and became a shoo-in for next season. Busch holds about 47,000 people, more than double what the Scotttrade Center can hold.  The tide turned toward the game being a Winter Classic after the Rams bolted for Los Angeles. Stillman claimed that the Rams’ departure had “a lot to do” with the game becoming a Winter Classic.

The Blues head also had good words for the 2009 Winter Classic, held at Wrigley Field. Stillman called the 2009 Winter Classic “a great event” and stated that it was the greatest sporting event he’d ever been to. Among the planned festivities for the game is an Alumni Game which Stillman expects to be fun for both sides. There were be more details regarding the festivities surrounding the game released at a later date, although it was confirmed that the Blues will have special jerseys for the game.
