RD8. Wilberto Rivera, RHP, Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy (PR)

How interesting that the Cardinals found Rivera at the academy founded by former Redbird Carlos Beltran, who is still active with the Houston Astros. The 18-year-old Rivera is physically mature for his age at 6-foot-3 and 207 pounds, and he’s thrown his fastball at speeds as high as 97 MPH. He still has yet to establish a breaking pitch, but since he’s just 18 years old, the Cardinals took a low-risk, high-reward gamble on him late on Day 2 and will hope that he can develop a second pitch and become a filthy reliever by the time he’s old enough to break into the big leagues.
