RD3. Scott Hurst, OF, Cal State-Fullerton

Hurst, an undersized, lefthanded-hitting center fielder, has been the MVP of a Cal-State Fullerton team that has lasted deep into the NCAA tournament this year, hitting .332/.424/.585 with 12 homers and seven steals. The Cardinals will likely be hoping that they can get him to sign for a little bit less than the the $570,900 bonus that he’s slotted to earn, thus giving them a little bit more breathing room during a year where their bonus pool is very small. On the field, the Cardinals will likely hope that Hurst can develop into a Harrison Bader-type “poor man’s five-tool player,” providing above-average if unspectacular skills as a power hitter, on-base guy, runner, and fielder. It’d be a real bonus if Hurst advanced as quickly though the minors as Bader, who is already in Triple-A after being the Cardinals’ first rounder in 2015, has been able to.
