The Blues have assigned highly-regarded goalie prospect Ville Husso to their ECHL affiliate.

After spending the first two weeks of the 2016-17 season with the AHL Chicago Wolves, St. Louis Blues goalie prospect Ville Husso has been assigned to the Missouri Mavericks, the Blues’ ECHL affiliate. The 21-year-old Husso, who is considered to be a very promising prospect and perhaps the goalie with the most upside in the Blues’ organization, signed an entry level contract with the Blues last spring.

Husso, a Finnish import, started two games for the Wolves, posting a 1-1 record, a 2.53 goals-against average and a .914 save percentage. Those aren’t bad numbers, especially for a player like Husso who was getting his first professional action in North America. But the Wolves have a goalie logjam this season, with Blues prospects Jordan Binnington and Pheonix Copley also in Chicago. Those two players have spent some time in the NHL and have more experience overall, so the Blues undoubtedly wanted to get them more extensive reps while still keeping Husso active at some level.

It’s a bit surprising that Husso was sent down in advance of the Wolves’ busy weekend, during which they’ll play three games in three days. After this weekend, though, the Wolves’ schedule opens up a bit, with plenty of back-to-backs, but no sets of three consecutive games again until January, so Husso probably wasn’t going to get a ton of action in the near future as the number three goaltender.

With that said, it’s easy to see Husso moving back up to Chicago again at some point this season. He’ll still have to share a net as a Maverick since Missouri already has Islanders prospect Eamon McAdam and veteran Josh Robinson, and the Blues or Wolves could have a goalie injury at some point that’d open up a spot for him. At this point, it seems as if the Blues would rather have him in the AHL under the most ideal of circumstances, but right now, they’re just trying to get him consistent playing time as he spends his first year in the U.S.
