Rams Fall to Redskins 24-10 After Lackluster Performance

The St Louis Rams are who we thought they were.

The St Louis Rams have a nasty habit of inconsistency. One week, they show up and score 34 points against the Seattle Seahawks. The next week, they can barely score double digits against the Washington Redskins. Rams fans know this inconsistency well, and at this point, aren’t that surprised.

Nick Foles was under pressure constantly from the Redskins front four. Washington didn’t even have to blitz very often for Foles to have to scramble and make plays. The offensive line struggled to create holes for the run game for the second consecutive week, only this time they also failed to protect Foles with any consistency. Tre Mason averaged 3.7 yards a carry in his return after missing week one. Tavon Austin on the other hand rushed for 40 yards on four carries. It’s nice to see the offense get him involved more. Kenny Britt managed to catch the Rams sole offensive highlight for the day, a deep bomb resulting from a fake end around.

  • The defense was below expectation. The pass defense allowed 203 yards passing from Kirk Cousins, but gave up 182 yards rushing, which is terrible given this defensive front. The defense was on the field a lot however, with the offense failing to produce any first downs. The Rams finished 2-12 on third down, something that wasn’t as big of an issue last week.

The Redskins used a two running back system, which was unexpected given Alfred Morris’ playing ability. The Redskins brought in rookie Matt Jones, who would finish the day with 19 carries for 123 yards. The Rams struggled to contain the outside edge on two plays during the first quarter, which resulted in a Washington touchdown.

The Rams were down 17-0 at halftime, and if it weren’t for some great defense in the second half, it could have been way worse. The Rams have to play the entire game, not just a single half. The two sacks is disappointing, but considering the Redskins ran it most of the game, it is expected. There aren’t many bright sides to take away from today’s game, other than Alec Oggletree’s 16 tackle performance and Tavon Austins rushing yards.

The Rams will now head back home again to face a very tough Pittsburgh Steelers team. Normally one would consider it a tough game, but given the history of the Rams performances while playing tough teams, fans should still have hope for next week.
