Todd Gurley Ruled Out For Week One
By Nic Moody
St Louis Rams head coach Jeff Fisher just broke a lot of hearts.
Sure, everybody pretty much knew running back Todd Gurley had a very little chance of playing in week one, but fans had hope after he was cleared for practice a few weeks ago. However, head coach Jeff Fisher called his press conference on Saturday evening, he immediately announced that Gurley would be held out against the week one match-up against Seattle for the home opener. This is disappointing, as Gurley has made tremendous progress on his rehab and physical therapy, so there was always a small chance.
Gurley tore his ACL last year in November, while he was a member of the Georgia Bulldogs.
This puts St Louis in a weird position. Benny Cunningham will likely start, with Isaiah Pead backing him up. Honestly though, after watching the preseason, Pead looked really good after missing all last season with an ACL tear, so the Rams might use a two back method getting Pead some real game experience.

Nick Foles has a prime chance to lead his team, and will be tested with the injuries to running back and the poor offensive line play. The Rams offensive line has struggled in every game to create holes for the running backs while their pass-blocking, which is still not great, is passable. Without a star running back that can make multiple defenders miss, don’t expect Cunningham or Pead to average much more than three yards a carry. The blocking just isn’t there yet.
Gurley said back in August that the Rams would not “push” his knee, so Fisher likely won’t play Gurley until he’s 110 percent sure he can go. The progress is still a good sign however, that Gurley will be back likely in the first half of the season, rather than later.
We still have no idea when Gurley will possibly be back, but we’re hoping the answer is sooner than later. With games against Seattle, Pittsburgh, and Green Bay in the first five games, the Rams need an offensive boost from somewhere, and Gurley could fit that bill.
