Rams VS Chiefs Revisited: Post Game Observations

The St Louis Rams finish the Preseason 0-4, but don’t be too worried yet.

The Rams lost to Kansas City 24-17 on Thursday night, and even though they couldn’t pull away with the win, The Rams did what they needed to. The Rams likely saw enough of their third and fourth stringers to now make the final cuts necessary for the 53-man roster.

Besides that, there were many good takeaways from the game. Tavon Austin Once again rallied fans when he caught a screen pass from quarterback Nick Foles that should have been a two yard gain, but instead Austin reversed field and picked up a couple of key blocks that would ultimately end with a more than 40 yard gain.

Austin finally looks like he can reach his potential of being a dynamic play-maker in the Rams offense. Even though most fans have already labeled him a bust, look for Austin to be a prime breakout candidate in 2015.

Rams running back Isaiah Pead had a wonderful night to cap off a very good training camp. Pead had nine carries for 52 yards, including a touchdown run. After an ACL tear last year, most people assumed Pead would no longer be on the team after this offseason, but now it appears Pead might have earned a roster spot.

The offensive line did not make much progress, as most Rams running backs struggled to find holes all night long. There is still time to improve, but it likely won’t be enough to get to a level that can stand up against Seattle.

Quarterback Nick Foles looked wonderful despite his stat count. Foles officially went two for three with an interception, but the interception was a perfectly thrown ball to tight end Jared Cook which bounced off of his hands. Foles is the best option the  Rams have had in a few years, and he will enter the season injury free. (knock on wood)

The coverage was not as good as I hoped it would be. Cody Davis did read Chase Daniel for a pick six, but outside of that, Chase would go 16-20. The coverage will be better with first string in, but there is not much depth beyond that, as the game showed.

Despite Robert Quinn and Aaron Donald not playing, the Rams were still able to apply great pressure and man-handle the Kansas City offensive line. Once the season begins, make no mistake, this defensive line will be scary.

The Rams have had an up and down preseason, but there is a load of potential in this group. The only question is, how long will it take for head coach Jeff Fisher to tap into that potential?
