Stephen Piscotty Providing Amazing Support

The St Louis Cardinals called up one of their biggest prospects no more than three weeks ago, and outfielder Stephen Piscotty was only expected to help provide some needed depth behind a stellar outfield. However, when Matt Holliday went down with his second quad injury of the season, Piscotty was asked to fill a full time role and become a starter, all at the age of 24.

Piscotty immediately made a huge impact. In his second major league at-bat, Piscotty got his first major league hit, the first of many. Only four days after being called up, Piscotty then won player of the game honors after the Cardinals won 1-0 against the Atlanta Braves, with Piscotty’s RBI being the only Cardinal run.

Piscotty since has been very consistent. He is currently batting .348, with 10 RBI’s in just the last three weeks. Piscotty doesn’t strike out that often, and has shortened his swing to a lovely quick draw swing that appears very fluent. This of course has made his power numbers drop, but who cares? Piscotty has an on base percentage of .389. He could hit zero home runs the rest of the season and I wouldn’t care.

Piscotty is also making himself known as a double machine. Meaning he hits a lot of doubles, not that he’s Albert Pujols times two. Piscotty has seven doubles so far, and he only has 23 hits total. Almost one out of every three hits he gets is a double. Piscotty knows how to find the gaps.

Piscotty also has a great tendency, or maybe lack of, that impresses me quite well. Piscotty does not show that much emotion, which sometimes can be a good and a bad thing. However, the reason Piscotty doesn’t show much emotion is that he doesn’t carry at-bats over from one to the other. Piscotty might strike out, but the next time he is up to bat, it’s not even close to being on his mind. Piscotty knows that everything in the past doesn’t mean anything for the current at bat.

The same also applies to when Piscotty gets a hit. Piscotty doesn’t get too high on himself because he knows the following at bat could be way more important. Piscotty takes the game step by step, one pitch at a time.

The Cardinals need Piscotty to keep his streak alive. He shows no signs of slowing down at all, which the Cardinals will need as they head down the stretch into the finals month of September.

The Cardinals will look to sweep the division rival Pirates tomorrow.
