St. Louis Rams’ Todd Gurley to Begin Training Camp on Active Roster

As the St. Louis Post-Dispatch‘s Jim Thomas first reported on Tuesday, St. Louis Rams first-round pick Todd Gurley will begin training camp on the active 90-man roster after he passed a conditioning test on Tuesday morning. There had been concern since the Rams selected Gurley that he would begin training camp on the Non-Football Injury list following the torn ACL he suffered last season at the University of Georgia, and that he would possibly miss some regular season games as he finished up his rehab process.

While Gurley will be limited to individual drills at the start of training camp, the decision to let him work with the team in any capacity as camp starts makes it much more likely that he’ll be on the field when the Rams kick off the regular season against the Seattle Seahawks on September 13. Of course, coach Jeff Fisher and his staff like to bring along rookies slowly (see 2012 second-rounder Brian Quick playing a bit role until his third NFL season, 2014 third-rounder Tre Mason being inactive for the first four weeks of last season, and second overall pick Greg Robinson being a backup for those same four games), so it’s possible that Gurley won’t supplant Gurley as the Rams’ primary running back until later on in the season, if at all.

Gurley, taken 10th overall in this year’s draft, is the first running back the Rams have taken in the first round since Steven Jackson was taken 24th overall in 2004. Gurley, a 6-foot-1, 230-pounder, has the potential to make a similar impact to the 6-foot-2, 240-pound Jackson, one of his childhood inspirations, though he’ll have to hope the team has more success than it had with Jackson, who failed to appear in a playoff game during his nine seasons in a Rams uniform.
