St Louis Rams in Extension Talks with Janoris Jenkins

The St Louis Rams are reportedly in negotiations to extend Cornerback Janoris Jenkins contract before the season begins, according to NFL reporter Rand Getlin.

Janoris Jenkins has a very strange relationship with the fans of St. Louis. Some people love him and think he is very underrated, and some fans hate him and think he is a waste of talent. Jenkins has shown flashes of brilliance, and had an outstanding rookie season by having four interceptions, three which were returned for touchdowns, as well as an additional defensive touchdown on a fumble recovery. Since his rookie season, Jenkins has been the number one defensive back for the team, known for occasionally getting burnt down the field, while also flashing plenty of talent and room for improvement.

Jenkins is quite the trash talker, as most cornerbacks are. He does work hard and even though he hasn’t shown an extreme amount of improvement over the years, he is still improved and gotten better each year. Jenkins is also great at fan interaction, holding Q&A’s on twitter and responding to fans frequently. Jenkins main problem on the field is that he always thinks every play can result in a pick six. Jenkins will sometimes get caught looking at the quarterback and get burned by his man.

I personally don’t believe the stats tell the whole story. I think Jenkins is an underrated player. I think he has at above average tackling ability despite missing 16 tackles last year. I watched Jenkins last year single-handedly bring down Marshawn Lynch in the backfield for a loss, so don’t tell me he can’t tackle. If Jenkins continues to work on the fundamentals, he can be one of the best cornerbacks in the league.

This is a wonderful representation of Jenkins Coverage abilities:

So does Jenkins deserve an extension? Ultimately, I believe he does. Jenkins was a huge risk coming out of the draft as he had many off-field problems. Since then, he has stayed out of trouble and started almost every single game since his rookie year. He has earned a spot on the field, the only issue is the money. It’s always about the money. With Jenkins being on the cocky side, it would not surprise me at all if he was asking for a huge sum. Jenkins play has been nice, but the last thing I want to see is the Rams overpay for a good corner, not a great one. If the Rams can secure jenkins for under seven million a year, that will be a great price for what Jenkins brings. Anything beyond that and they’re stretching.

If the deal does not get done before the season starts, It would appear Jenkins will bet on himself and wait till the end of the season for negotiation.
