What Should the St. Louis Rams be Watching Out for at the 2015 Senior Bowl?

Quarterback: Though the Rams would be wise to select a quarterback in this year’s draft, they’re probably not going to get a whole lot out of the crop of quarterbacks at this year’s Senior Bowl. Baylor’s Bryce Petty seems to be the only player among the group with an outside shot of becoming a solid NFL starter, though he has noticeable flaws to his game and certainly will need development before he has a chance of being an effective pro quarterback.

East Carolina’s Shane Carden and Colorado State’s Garrett Grayson are intriguing possibilities as backups, though both have the issue of being unproven against elite competition and having spent their careers in simple, quarterback-friendly offenses. The remainder of the quarterbacks are fighting for the chance to be selected with sixth or seventh-round picks and realistically have very little chance of ever even being steady NFL backups. We saw where that path led last year when the Rams took a shot in the dark with SMU signal-caller Garrett Gilbert and ended up cutting him by the end of the season.

Unless they find a way to trade up for one of the top two quarterbacks in this draft, Marcus Mariota or Jameis Winston, the guy who probably makes the most sense for the Rams is UCLA redshirt junior Brett Hundley, who actually was invited to the Senior Bowl since he’s graduated, but declined his invitation. Otherwise, the only quarterback in Mobile worth evaluating as anything more than a camp arm or practice squad candidate is likely Petty.
