The Cardinals beat the Reds 11-4 in 10 innings on Sunday night. With the win, the Cardinals take the series and Now are ahead of the Reds by 4 games atop the NL Central.
It didn’t look like it would be a win for the Cardinals at the beginning of the game as the Reds jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. Jay Bruce had 3 RBIs in this game. Bruce also had an RBI in all 3 games of the series this weekend and is on a hot streak. Cardinals public enemy number 1 Brandon Phillips had the other RBI for the Reds in the first inning off of an opposite field hit.
The Cardinals were able to tie the game in the 4th inning with a solo home run by Carlos Beltran and a double from Yadier Molina to bring home Matt Holliday who also hit a double.
The Reds would take the lead by two runs in the bottom of the fifth but the Cardinals were up to the challenge and tied the game in the top of the 7th.
So the game went to extra innings and the Cardinals wasted no time in displaying their dominance.
Allen Craig led off with a walk. Yadier Molina popped out to his best friend Brandon Phillips (end sarcasm). Then David Freese extended his hitting streak to 19 games with a single to advance Allen Craig to second. Daniel Descalso doubles to bring home Allen Craig. The Reds intentionally walked John Jay to bring Pete Kosma to the plate who struck out on a foul tip.
2 outs in the inning, that’s when the Cardinals bats came alive. Matt Carpenter hits a single to left field, Descalso and Freese come into score. Then Carlos Beltran singles to load the bases for Matt Holliday. Holliday responds by hitting a grand same to make the lead 11-4 which ended up being the final score.
