Cardinals-Rangers Series Preview

It’s been 602 days since the Texas Rangers took the field against the St. Louis Cardinals. That was Game 7 of the 2011 World Series. That bitter taste in the Rangers’s mouth may have subsided but the Rangers are looking to prove that they are one of the best teams in major league baseball once again. Here is a quick preview of the Rangers-Cardinals series.

Probable Starters (Away team pitcher listed first)

Friday: Derek Holland (5-4, 3.30 ERA) vs. Tyler Lyons (2-3, 4.65 ERA)

Saturday: Martin Perez (0-1, 5.06 ERA) vs. Shelby Miller (8-4, 2.08 ERA)

Sunday: Nick Tepesch (3-6, 4.84 ERA) vs. Adam Wainwright (10-4, 2.37 ERA)

Keys to the series

Jump on the starters early

The Cardinals have to start putting up runs early, especially tonight with Tyler Lyons on the mound. Derek Holland has also struggled in his last 3 starts, giving up 10 earned runs. It would help if Tyler Lyons was on his game, but he hasn’t been in his last 3 starts giving up 14 earned runs. If this trend continues for both starting pitchers, tonight will be run-tastic (Yes I just made up that word). The offense needs to score many runs and early.

Miller and Wainwright need to be on their game.

Tonight’s matchup might be a win or a loss but the Cardinals have the clear advantage in the starting pitching matchup on Saturday and Sunday. Shelby Miller (ERA 0.99 at home) and Adam Wainwright (ERA 1.91 at home) have to give their best games against a strong Rangers lineup.

Prediction:

Cardinals take 2.

Well that’s exactly what the Cards did they jumped on Holland early, however he settled in and Lyons just showed he should not be starting any more.; We cant always have wins like Lynns bad start against Miami. Thats 4 in a row for Lyons and many PD writers must be watching other games because they are writing as if Lyons is not responsible. Time has come for him to go down and tune up. Maybe JUST Maybe Kelly can handle a few spot starts till Mo figures this out.
For sure he needs to make a trade. Again many writers will disagree, we have now gone threw about all of the top prospects and not one other then maybe Gast can handle it and we wont see him anytime soon. There are so many down on that farm that will NEVER make this team yet have worth for a deal. Not a rental BUT a real deal we can resign with the money coming off the books next year. ie Furcal, Carpenter, Westbrook, I leave Beltran out because I truly believe Mo must find a way to sign him with an option assuming he stays healthy.. Taveras or not.

Well I am glad I was right, but like you said the Cardinals have figured out Tyler Lyons isn’t starter material. Maybe a Middle relief pitcher but not a starter. Michael Blazek looked good on Saturday. With Miller, Wainwright, Lynn, and Westbrook the Cardinals need a solid 5th starter until Garcia gets healthy (if ever). I know the Cardinals don’t want to use Wacha because they don’t want to make him arbitration eligible earlier than 2016 but in a tight NL Central race, you might have to suck it up and play him.
