It’s been 602 days since the Texas Rangers took the field against the St. Louis Cardinals. That was Game 7 of the 2011 World Series. That bitter taste in the Rangers’s mouth may have subsided but the Rangers are looking to prove that they are one of the best teams in major league baseball once again. Here is a quick preview of the Rangers-Cardinals series.

Probable Starters (Away team pitcher listed first)

Friday: Derek Holland (5-4, 3.30 ERA) vs. Tyler Lyons (2-3, 4.65 ERA)

Saturday: Martin Perez (0-1, 5.06 ERA) vs. Shelby Miller (8-4, 2.08 ERA)

Sunday: Nick Tepesch (3-6, 4.84 ERA) vs. Adam Wainwright (10-4, 2.37 ERA)

Keys to the series

Jump on the starters early

The Cardinals have to start putting up runs early, especially tonight with Tyler Lyons on the mound. Derek Holland has also struggled in his last 3 starts, giving up 10 earned runs. It would help if Tyler Lyons was on his game, but he hasn’t been in his last 3 starts giving up 14 earned runs. If this trend continues for both starting pitchers, tonight will be run-tastic (Yes I just made up that word). The offense needs to score many runs and early.

Miller and Wainwright need to be on their game.

Tonight’s matchup might be a win or a loss but the Cardinals have the clear advantage in the starting pitching matchup on Saturday and Sunday. Shelby Miller (ERA 0.99 at home) and Adam Wainwright (ERA 1.91 at home) have to give their best games against a strong Rangers lineup.

Prediction:

Cardinals take 2.
