RD6. Zach Jackson, C, Winter Haven HS (FL)

As the Cardinals always like to do during the middle of the draft’s second day, they took a catcher on Tuesday, selecting high-schooler Zach Jackson. Jackson was a highly-regarded prospect, being ranked 133rd by MLB Pipeline and 182nd by Baseball America, but he fell to the sixth round (presumably because of signability concerns created by his commitment to the University of Florida). The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder is considered to be an OK defender with plus arm strength, and more significantly, he’s got impressive power potential from the left side of the plate. The Cards’ chances of signing Jackson are probably still slim, but since they took college players with six of their other seven Day 2 picks (including four seniors), it’s very possible that they could sign enough players under slot to make a competitive offer to Jackson.
