St. Louis Cardinals: Matt Carpenter Suspended One Game for Contact With Umpire
Matt Carpenter will miss Tuesday’s game after making contact with an umpire this past weekend.
Major League Baseball announced on Tuesday afternoon that St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Matt Carpenter has been suspended one game for tapping umpire John Tumpane during an argument in the seventh inning of the Cardinals’ 6-4 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday. The argument eventually led to the ejections of both Carpenter and manager Mike Matheny.
Carpenter will serve the suspension for the Cardinals’ Tuesday matchup with the Toronto Blue Jays at Busch Stadium. He was originally set to move up one spot in the order, hitting second behind leadoff man Dexter Fowler, before his decision to serve the suspension immediately was announced.
It’ll be interesting to see if Carpenter does end up sticking in the two hole when he returns for Wednesday night’s game. He hasn’t exactly performed at the level expected of a two hitter this season, posting a .236/.362/.364 slash line through his first 17 games, though he did have a modest seven-game hitting streak going before it was snapped with his 0-for-3 performance on Sunday.
Next: Cardinals Remove Anthony García from 40-Man Roster
Since Carpenter won’t be replaced on the roster for Tuesday’s game and the Cardinals are currently employing a 13-man pitching staff, the team will be left with just three available bench players: catcher Eric Fryer, infielder Greg Garcia, and outfielder/first baseman José Martínez.
