32. Wayne Babych

Forward, 1978-84; 396 games, 155 goals, 190 assists, minus-21 rating, 382 PIM

Wayne Babych didn’t have a long shelf life in the NHL, but at the height of his prime, he was up there with anyone in terms of dominance. He had at least 60 points in three straight seasons to begin his NHL career, and that stretch culminated with a 1980-81 season during which he scored 54 goals and added 42 assists, earning a spot on the All-Star team and votes for the Selke Trophy.

Unfortunately, after suffering a shoulder injury in a fight during a preseason game prior to the 1981-82 season, Babych was never the same. He had three more mediocre seasons (which were perhaps less than mediocre considering how easy it was to put up points during that era) with the Blues from ’81-’82 to ’83-’84, then was waived with a season left on that huge contract, playing it out with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He did have another 20-goal season with Pittsburgh in 1984-85, but he continued to be haunted by injuries and was out of the league by age 28.
