Do the St. Louis Cardinals have the best fan base in the world?

It seems that in today’s day and age, the “Best Fans in Baseball” tag is used to criticize the St. Louis Cardinals fan base far more often than it’s used for praise. Because of the frequent insults, not only from Cubs fans but often from media and fans all across the country, it’s almost easy to forget that the Cardinals’ fan base actually is one of the most loyal and passionate in baseball, if not sports overall.

FanSided recognized this passion as they revealed their latest list of teams in the “Fandom 250,” a comprehensive list of the top 250 fan bases in sports and entertainment. Alongside teams such as the Kansas City Royals and San Francisco Giants and brands such as Harley Davidson and Chevrolet, the Cardinals were guaranteed a spot through a list of 10 fandoms announced this morning.

The Cardinals ranked second in baseball in attendance in 2016, with 3,444,490 fans passing through the gates overall and an average of 42,524 per game.

While activities such as booing Trevor Rosenthal off the mound make the fans look bad (especially from a player’s perspective), things like giving Matt Holliday one of the greatest send-offs in recent memory provide great reminders of why many consider the Cardinals fan base to be the most passionate in the sport.

The rest of the list will be coming out in the ensuing days of November, with the top fan base being named on December 6th. Until then, FanSided is unveiling 10 companies/teams per day, right up until the full list of 250 is reached.
