Mike Ohlman

Perhaps the Cardinals will deem it unnecessary to carry four catchers on their big-league roster this September, but it’s worth noting that they’ve done so a couple times over the past few years, having carried Yadier Molina, Tony Cruz, Rob Johnson, and Audry Perez in September of 2013, then utilizing several different combinations of Molina, Cruz, Cody Stanley, Ed Easley, and Travis Tartamella in September of last year. Since Mike Ohlman has been on the Cardinals’ 40-man roster for the past two years and has now paid his dues in Triple-A, it’d make sense to give him a look after the Triple-A season ends, even if all he does is pinch-hit and catch in blowouts.

Ohlman has split time with Carson Kelly in Memphis this year and had to deal with an odd, seemingly undeserved demotion to Double-A, but he’s put up pretty good numbers when given the opportunity. He’s posted a respectable .284/.340/.453 slash line with five homers at Memphis this year, so as he gets set to enter next year’s spring training with no minor-league options remaining, it would be logical for him to come up and get his feet wet as the season draws to a close.
