Fact 1: The Cardinals’ lineup has become very lefthanded, and Tommy Pham is really their only dependable righty pinch hitter at the moment.

Fact 2: 28-year-old Jose Martinez is a righthanded hitter, and he’s shown a very strong ability to get on base over his past four minor-league seasons, most of all in 2015, when he posted a .384/.461/.563 line in 396 plate appearances with the Royals’ Triple-A affiliate.

Fact 3: Martinez is already on the Cardinals’ 40-man roster, and he’d be an easy, intriguing addition to the September bench. The Cardinals already have plenty of depth at the positions that he plays (first base and the corner outfield spots), but his righthanded bat could be very valuable off the bench in the absence of Matt Holliday and Aledmys Diaz.
