Dean Kiekhefer

With Tyler Lyons shelved for the season with a knee injury, the Cardinals will be seeking a third lefthander for their expanded bullpen, and Kiekhefer seems to be the man for the job. While Kiekhefer’s big-league ERA this year isn’t too pretty (4.50), he’s done a pretty good job of keeping runners off base, and his numbers against lefty hitters–the guys who he should be facing more often than not–are dominant. While facing 29 lefthanded hitters, Kiekhefer has yielded a .179 batting average while walking just one batter and striking out nine. When you factor in that Kiekhefer has posted a spectacular 1.65 ERA in the Pacific Coast League this season, it’s apparent that he’s fully deserving of a September call up.
