SP Austin Gomber

Luke Weaver might have taken this spot had he remained in the minors to this point, despite the fact that he didn’t even make his minor-league debut until June 5. However, no starting pitcher has dominated all season long quite like lefty Austin Gomber has. Over 17 starts at High-A Palm Beach, Gomber averaged 6 1/3 innings per start, posting a 2.93 ERA with a 1.07 WHIP and .229 opponent batting average. He displayed fantastic command, allowing just 24 walks and hitting four batters over 107 2/3 innings.

After being promoted to Double-A Springfield for two starts in July, Gomber was spectacular, giving up just one run on five hits and five walks spread over 13 innings. He was placed on the DL on August 3 with what’s thought to be a relatively minor injury, though at this point it wouldn’t be shocking if he was done for the 2016 season.

Overall, though, the Cardinals’ minor-league system has lost quite a bit of lefty pitching depth over the past year with the trade of Rob Kaminsky and serious injuries to Marco Gonzales and Tim Cooney, so it’s good to see a lefty starter show that he’s got real big-league potential.
