UT Breyvic Valera

In an organization that features a big-league club with tons of “utility starters”–guys who can be comfortably plugged into the lineup every day but can play a variety of positions–Breyvic Valera’s ability to play every position besides pitcher and catcher might not be the most helpful résumé booster. It’s certainly not something that’s going to hurt him, though, and if he continues to hit like he has in his first 61 games at Triple-A, during which he’s posted a .353/.424/.422 slash line, he’s going to get a crack at the big leagues sooner or later.

The fact that Valera plays solid to above-average defense at both middle infield positions should definitely help his cause as well. The Cardinals have seen how much suspect defense can derail their success this season, so if they’re seeking to develop a more reliable plan than, say, having to play Jedd Gyorko in spot duty at shortstop in 2017, Valera might be a guy to consider.
