The Blues officially have a goalie back in the fold who could be their third-stringer this season.

The St. Louis Blues announced on Friday morning that they’ve re-signed goaltender Jordan Binnington to a one-year, two-way contract for the 2016-17 season.

More from Arch Authority

The 23-year-old Binnington spent some time with the NHL club while Jake Allen was injured in 2015-16, and he made his NHL debut on January 14, stopping three of the four shots that he faced while relieving Brian Elliott for the final 12:47 of a loss to the Carolina Hurricanes.

Binnington spent most of 2015-16 with the AHL Chicago Wolves. It was his second full season in the AHL and his third pro season overall. In 41 games for the Wolves, Binnington went 17-18-5, posting a .907 save percentage and 2.85 goals-against average with one shutout. This coming season, all indications point to him going back to the AHL for a third straight year, as Jake Allen and Carter Hutton are expected to be the Blues’ goalies.

The announcement of Binnington’s retention creates more question as to whether the Blues will bring back Pheonix Copley, Binnington’s tandem partner with the Wolves in 2015-16. The Blues have Finnish import Ville Husso under contract for 2016-17, and though the 21-year-old performed well at last week’s prospect camp, it’s unknown whether he made a strong enough impression to convince the Blues that he’s worthy of an AHL assignment this fall. If the Blues decide to take more of a wait-and-see approach with Husso, they could send him to the ECHL–or even keep him as part of a three-man rotation in Chicago–while Copley continues to battle Binnington for depth chart position.
