Carlos Martinez

Worthiness: 5/10, Likelihood: 3/10

A 6-0 record, 1.76 ERA, and 0.91 WHIP: those are Carlos Martinez’s 2016 numbers if you delete the month of May from the books. Unfortunately, that month happened, and the ugly stat line that he posted—a 1-5 record, 5.18 ERA, and 1.39 WHIP in six starts—might be enough to ruin his chances of being an All-Star this year.

While impressive, his overall numbers for the year don’t stack up too well in any important categories compared to other starters in contention for All-Star roles. His 3.02 ERA ranked 17th among qualified starters, while his 1.09 WHIP ranks 14th. Even his .209 opponent batting average, his most marketable statistic this year, ranks him only 10th among the league’s qualified starters. Perhaps Martinez could have a chance if a slew of starters end up pitching on the Sunday before the All-Star Game and are rendered ineligible, but otherwise, it looks as if the month of May will prevent him from getting to San Diego.
