Matt Holliday

Worthiness: 4/10, Likelihood: 2/10

Based on the way Matt Holliday started this season, one would have guessed that he’d completely lost his touch as a middle-of-the-lineup threat, and by extension, it looked like an eighth All-Star berth would be completely out of the question. With the way that he’s rediscovered his power stroke over the past five weeks, though, he’s at least making a case for a spot, even if his odds are still slim. Holliday is now ranked fourth in RBI and tied for eight in home runs among NL outfielders. Though his .257 batting average is rather pedestrian, his .326 OBP and .820 OPS are certainly nothing to be ashamed of, and they’re numbers that might be able to earn him a spot as an injury replacement if someone on the initial roster goes down.

In all honesty, though, Holliday hasn’t been one of the best hitters on a Cardinals team that’s been great offensively but has been on the outside looking in of the NL playoff race for much of the first half, so his odds are very slim.
