Matt Adams

Worthiness: 5/10, Likelihood: 1/10

Matt Adams has had his All-Star candidacy hurt by the fact that he’s shared playing time with Brandon Moss, Matt Holliday, Matt Carpenter, and Jedd Gyorko, and it hasn’t helped him that he’s missed time on two different occasions with back pain. When he’s been on the field, though, Adams has been one of the most impactful first basemen in the league. His .882 OPS ranks fifth among NL first basemen with 150 or more at-bats, while his .305 batting average is the best among that group.

The first base group is crowded, with Paul Goldschmidt, Anthony Rizzo, and Brandon Belt being fully deserving based on their performance this year, Wil Myers being a candidate because he plays on a bad team, and Freddie Freeman possibly being in the mix because he’s on a bad team and he has a history of being an All-Star caliber player. Thus, it’s nearly impossible that Adams will even garner consideration for a selection. Just based on his performance this year, though, it’s easy to argue that he’s having one of the best seasons of any player on the team.
