Poor starting pitching ran rampant across the St. Louis Cardinals’ minor-league system on Monday.

Monday was a rough day for the Cardinals’ minor-league system, as three of the four teams lost. Several of the players who are closest to getting a chance in the majors–namely starting pitcher Alex Reyes and first baseman/outfielder David Washington–had days to remember. The day’s theme was poor starting pitching, as Reyes was the only starter who had his best stuff, and as a result, his was the only team in the system that won.

Triple-A Memphis won 4-3 over Nashville

  • After a rough start last time out, Alex Reyes rebounded with a solid effort, throwing five innings while giving up just one earned run. Reyes allowed two hits, walked three, and struck out nine.
  • Memphis’s top hitter Monday was first baseman David Washington, who went 2-for-4 with a double and triple while also collecting a walk.
  • Shortstop Matt Williams stole three bases, swiping second twice and third once.
  • Kolten Wong went 1-for-4 with a walk as he started his first career game in center field. Wong got just one defensive chance, catching a fly ball to center in the eighth inning.

Double-A Springfield lost 9-4 to Tulsa

  • Catcher Carson Kelly had the only extra-base hit in the Cardinals’ loss, coming up with a double in the eighth inning. Kelly went 2-for-4 on the day. Mike Ohlman, who has been a catcher for the entirety of his minor-league career but appears to be undergoing a conversion to first base since his demotion to Springfield late last month, was the only other Cardinal to have multiple hits Monday, also going 2-for-4.
  • Springfield starter Trey Nielsen had another rough outing in what’s been a trying month of June for him so far (0-3, 5.82 ERA, 1.82 WHIP, .343 BAA in three starts), giving up three earned runs on five hits and four walks in five innings. Reliever Heath Wyatt also struggled significantly, giving up four earned runs on six hits (including a three-run homer) in two innings.

High-A Palm Beach lost 8-3 to Brevard County

  • Center fielder Blake Drake was the only Cardinal to collect multiple hits Monday, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and a walk.
  • Starter Jacob Evans had a rough day to say the least, giving up eight earned runs on 10 hits and a walk in four innings. It was Evans’ team-leading seventh loss of the season.

  • DH Jose Godoy, who’s been making great contact during his first full-season campaign, had his second straight multi-hit game, going 2-for-4.
  • Starting pitcher Junior Fernandez had one of his worst starts of the season, giving up five earned runs on eight hits and four walks while throwing just 82 pitches over five innings.
