The St. Louis Cardinals organization went undefeated on Sunday as starting pitching reigned supreme.

It was a good day across the St. Louis Cardinals organization on Sunday, as the four full-season minor-league affiliates in the system backed up the big-league club’s victory with wins of their own. It wasn’t the strongest offensive day for the system, but starting pitchers such as Deck McGuire and Daniel Poncedeleon had very strong starts.

Triple-A Memphis won 5-0 over Colorado Springs

  • Starting pitcher Deck McGuire was the star for Memphis on Sunday, throwing eight shutout innings while allowing just two hits and one walk. It was the second time in his last three starts that McGuire didn’t allow an earned run. He was relieved for the ninth by Miguel Socolovich, who threw a scoreless frame.
  • The Redbirds had just two extra-base hits on Sunday: a Tommy Pham double and a Kolten Wong triple.

Double-A Springfield won 4-3 over Tulsa

  • Daniel Poncedeleon had a very strong start for Springfield, giving up just one hit while allowing just one hit (a solo homer) and a walk over four innings.
  • All of the Cardinals’ runs came via the long ball. Right fielder Jonathan Rodriguez hit a two-run homer, while second baseman Bruce Caldwell and catcher Carson Kelly both had solo shots. Rodriguez and Caldwell were the only Springfield hitters to collect two hits on the day.
  • Reliever Seth Maness, making his third rehab appearance at Springfield, allowed a solo home run during an otherwise solid fifth inning. It was the first run that Maness allowed during his rehab stint.
  • Catcher Brayan Pena, who’s already started three games at Springfield on his rehab assignment, started at first base for the Cardinals on Sunday and went 0-for-3 with a strikeout.
