Cardinals Beat Arizona 11-4 Despite Wainwright
Wainwright goes five in another disappointing start.
The Saint Louis Cardinals beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 11-4 Wednesday night, despite another poor start from Adam Wainwright. Wainwright gave up four runs on seven hits in five and a third innings, while also striking out five, his highest total this season. The majority of the Diamondbacks’ offense came off of two home runs early in the game; Brandon Drury homered on a 1-1 pitch in the second inning to open the scoring for the Diamondbacks and Paul Goldschimdt hit one out in the fourth to bring the score to 3-1.

After that Goldschmidt home run, the Cardinals unloaded on the Diamondbacks, scoring nine runs in the next three innings. Diamondbacks starter Patrick Corbin started off strong, only giving up one run in the first four innings of play. Even with giving up a home run to Aledmys Diaz (who continued his streak of fantastic play) in the fifth, Corbin’s start didn’t run into trouble until the sixth.
That’s when the Cardinals bats decided to wake up, scoring five runs on three consecutive at-bats in the inning. The centerpiece of that inning was a bases-clearing triple by none other than Adam Wainwright himself, scoring Diaz, Jedd Gyorko, and Ruben Tejada. With the next at-bat, Stephen Piscotty brought in Wainwright with a single, and Matt Holliday hit a ground rule double to score Piscotty.

The Diamondbacks closed the gap a bit with a David Peralta single in the bottom half of the inning, but the damage was done. Run-scoring singles by Diaz and Matt Carpenter in the seventh only added insult to injury, making the score 10-4, and Piscotty added to the pile in the ninth. The Cardinals have taken two of three from the Diamondbacks so far, and look to close out the series with a win tomorrow. Michael Wacha is projected to start on the mound for the Cardinals.
