3. Chris Pronger

85 games (1996-2004), 10 goals, 41 assists, +15 rating (all-time best in Blues playoff history), 210 penalty minutes, two game-winning goals

While guys like Al MacInnis and Jeff Brown may have made a bigger offensive impact, “Prongs” was the most valuable defenseman in his own zone that the Blues have ever had, especially in the postseason. His success played a major part in one of the most prolific eras in franchise history, and the Blues reached the playoffs in every season for which he was on the roster. (In fact, Pronger played in every NHL postseason from 1995-96 to 2010-11, the last healthy season of his career).

While he was consistently a strong playoff performer, Pronger’s best postseason probably came in 2000-01, when he delivered a goal, seven assists, a plus-10 rating, and 32 penalty minutes in 15 games as the Blues advanced to the Conference Finals before losing to the Colorado Avalanche. During that postseason, Pronger averaged an incredible 33:50, which amazingly was not his all-time best time on ice per game, since he averaged 35:53 during the Blues’ 13-game postseason run in 1998-99.

The Blues have been within one series of the Stanley Cup Finals just twice since reaching the Finals in their first three seasons, and Pronger was arguably the most important player on one of those teams that made the long run in 2000-01. Thus, Pronger earns the third spot on this list and the top ranking among Blues playoff defensemen.
