How are you feeling heading into Game 7? If you’re like me, desperate.

To: The St. Louis Blues

Don’t do this. You know what I mean. Don’t do this thing that you do every spring for as long as I and most hockey fans in this city can remember. You’ve given your fans in every generation reasons to jump ship, reasons to believe that the spring will be no different than the previous one. Yes, we’ve seen glimpses of hope, but few and far between are the moments where we as a collective group of fans can look back and say, “wow, that was a team that lifted our spirits.” No, our history is filled with more disappointment than glory. We realize that you as a team are only a small part of this long history of disappointment. You weren’t on the President’s Trophy-winning team that blew their chance in the spring of 2000 by losing the first-round series to the inferior San Jose Sharks. You weren’t on the team in 2002 that dismantled the Blackhawks in the first round, only to subsequently be dismantled by the Detroit Red Wings in Round 2.

Every year we have to revel in other fans’ joy as their team does what our team won’t: beat our rivals.

Some of you were on those teams that spectacularly blew 2-0 1st round series leads in both 2013 and 2014 by never winning another game in either series. Look at all of this disappointment, and these don’t include first-round exits in 2003 and 2004. It’s tough being your fan. So I ask again, don’t do this.

You had them, the defending champs, the hated Blackhawks on the ropes.

Not only in the series, which you led 3-1, but in the potentially decisive Game 6. You understand that we hate the Blackhawks right? Just like we hated the Red Wings in the 90’s. However, every year we Blues fans have to watch playoff hockey and root for other teams to knock out the big guys. Every year we have to revel in other fans’ joy as their team does what our team won’t: beat our rivals.

But you had it! We as collective hockey fans were ready! Ready to explode, ready to revel, ready to finally see you reach your potential and advance in the playoffs against the team we despise the most…AND YOU’RE BLOWING IT AGAIN!

So don’t do this. Not this year, not the year when our football team left us, not the year where the Cubs are seemingly better than the Cardinals. The moment is right, the time is now! Take this series!  This is your time to take the sports fans in this city and elevate us. We are battered, we are broken, but you have the ability to lift us. This is your time to take your place as one of the NHL’s elite teams. This is your moment, go out and take it!
