As they continue to accumulate playoff depth, the St. Louis Blues have summoned Chris Butler from the AHL.

The St. Louis Blues made yet another move to increase their postseason depth, recalling defenseman Chris Butler from the Chicago Wolves on Thursday morning. Other than locker room space, there’s no cost to the move, as the Wolves’ season ended last Saturday, giving the Blues the opportunity to expand the NHL roster to their heart’s desire.

The 29-year-old Butler suited up in five games for the Blues over two stints this season. He had no points, a minus-1 rating, and four penalty minutes.

Butler, a St. Louis native, was given a one-way contract this summer and expected to be part of the NHL team as the seventh defenseman until Joel Edmundson and Colton Parayko unexpectedly stepped up during training camp and forced him back to the AHL. This move to bring him back was presumably made so that the Blues can collect a little bit more on their $675,000 investment by at least having Butler in the building, as well as to give Butler a small portion of the experience he expected when he decided to re-sign with the Blues on the first day of free agency last July.

With that said, it can’t hurt to have a little bit of extra defensive depth around while Carl Gunnarsson is out with an upper-body injury. He’s already been replaced in the lineup by Robert Bortuzzo, and Petteri Lindbohm is also on standby if another replacement is needed, but now the Blues will at least have Butler practicing and staying ready in case they need to switch things up at any point.
