Greg Garcia’s chances of making the Opening Day roster went way up when Jhonny Peralta suffered a serious thumb injury last weekend. To earn a roster spot, though, the lefthanded hitter will need to have a solid spring and outplay guys like Aledmys Diaz and Dean Anna, and he hasn’t done that so far. Garcia’s just 2-for-13 with no walks or extra-base hits thus far, and he also committed a throwing error at third base in Thursday’s loss. Meanwhile, Diaz, who is challenging Jedd Gyorko for the starting shortstop job, is 6-for-20 with two doubles, and Anna (who has virtually the same skill set as Garcia, but is two years older) is 3-for-7 with a steal. It’s a decent possibility that just one player among Garcia, Diaz, and Anna will make the Opening Day roster since Gyorko is so versatile, so Garcia is going to need to step it up if he’s going to open the season in the majors.
