UP: Carlos Peguero, OF

Peguero, a veteran of five major-league seasons, is looking to have a strong spring and force his way onto the Opening Day roster, even though he’s in camp as a non-roster invitee. He’s done a great job of showcasing himself thus far, as he’s 5-for-11 with three doubles and a walk through six spring games.

Peguero, who can handle center field but is much more capable at the outfield corners, is primarily fighting the numbers as he battles to make the Cardinals’ roster. He could conceivably beat out Tommy Pham, who’s got just one season of substantial big-league experience and is hitting .235/.316/.353 through 19 spring plate appearances. A more likely scenario, however, is that Peguero will create a spot for himself now that Jhonny Peralta’s going to miss the next 2-3 months following thumb surgery this week. Peguero may be redundant on a team that already has Pham, Randal Grichuk, Stephen Piscotty, Brandon Moss, and Matt Holliday in the outfield, but if he has a good enough spring, perhaps he can team with Matt Adams to provide some extra lefthanded power off the bench.
