Safe and Sound

Jonathan Broxton, Seth Maness, Seung Hwan Oh, Trevor Rosenthal, Kevin Siegrist, Jordan Walden (if healthy)

This group is significantly fuller than it was just over a month ago. First of all, the Cardinals signed famed Korean closer Seung Hwan Oh on January 11, giving Trevor Rosenthal a full-time setup man. Secondly, it came to light that Jordan Walden, who last pitched on April 29 of last year before sustaining a serious shoulder injury, is expected to be healthy for 2016, despite rumors that the injury would put his career in jeopardy.

With Rosenthal, Walden, and Jonathan Broxton in the fold, the Cardinals will have three former All-Star closers in their bullpen, not to mention Oh, who is the Korea Baseball Organization’s all-time leader in saves. They’ll surely be joined by Siegrist, a hard-throwing lefty who is perfectly capable of pitching in high-leverage situations, and Seth Maness, one of the best double-play inducers in Major League Baseball.

Assuming that Walden (and all the others, for that matter) can make it through spring training healthy, the Cardinals will have six relievers basically locked into big-league roles, leaving room for one or two others on the opening roster.
