Mizzou Tigers’ leading scorer dismissed for academic reasons.

Wes Clark has been dismissed from the Mizzou Tigers men’s basketball team. In a statement released today, the athletic department stated that the departure was due to Wes Clark “[failing] to meet the academic expectations” of the department. Of all the losses this year, this is likely the most stunning so far. Clark was the Tigers’ leading scorer with 9.8 points per game, although his production as of late has been spotty. Clark has not made a field goal in his last two appearances for the Mizzou Tigers.

More from Missouri Tigers

Clark was a starter in all 25 games this season, and was first in minutes played so far this season. His 30 three-pointers also lead the team and his 74 assists put him at second on the ever-dwindling squad. Despite this, his production has waned in the last few games. As mentioned before, he hasn’t made a field goal in his last two appearances, and his leading 9.8 PPG is largely driven by a few 20-point performances at the beginning of the season.

Regardless, his dismissal is a huge blow to the Mizzou Tigers. Clark was the most experienced of the bunch, and his leadership, if lax, was key on such a young team. In addition, this leaves the Tigers hurting for scholarship guards; only six remain. Now, leadership responsibilities will largely fall to senior Ryan Rosburg. Rosburg has been able to handle himself well in press conferences, but that ability has yet to truly translate to court success. He will have the take the reins of the youngest teams in the SEC, one that includes players like Terrence Phillips and Kevin Puryear; player that have shown themselves to be adept on the court, but not so much off it.
