Patrik Berglund

40 games missed from October 8-December 31 (recovery from shoulder surgery)

The Blues and Patrik Berglund took what was perhaps a needed mutual break from each other during the 2015 portion of this season’s schedule. Berglund vastly underperformed during 2014-15, accumulating just 12 goals and 15 assists in 77 games, causing many to wonder if the former first-round pick even deserved a spot in the team’s lineup this season. In what may have been a blessing in disguise, however, Berglund dealt with a few incidents over the summer that caused him to believe that he could no longer play through the shoulder injury that had been nagging him for a season-and-a-half, and he opted for surgery right before training camp.

It wasn’t like the Blues tremendously missed Berglund during the early part of the schedule; professional tryout signees Scott Gomez and Scottie Upshall contributed much more heavily than anyone could have expected them to, and as the schedule moved along Magnus Paajarvi provided energy and physicality similar to what Berglund contributed during 2014-15. But as those players cooled off and the Blues’ maddening lack of consistency became apparent in December, the desire for Berglund’s return became more apparent.

Immediately after Berglund’s January 2 return, it looked like maybe the surgery had helped restore his former level of offensive productivity. Over his first eight games, Berglund had eight goals and eight assists while consistently getting shots on goal. Now, though, Berglund has been held pointless in his last eight games, and he’s averaging just one shot on goal per contest over that period, having been held without one in his past three games. Perhaps it’s just a matter of him finding his rhythm and heating up again, but at the moment there has to be legitimate concern that Berglund’s best days are far behind him.
