St. Louis Rams WR Stedman Bailey Shot on Tuesday in Miami
Prayers began circulating quickly for the suspended wide receiver as news broke of his shooting on Tuesday.
News surfaced late Tuesday night that St. Louis Rams wide receiver Stedman Bailey was shot while in his hometown of Miami, Florida. Bailey was in the passenger seat of a vehicle driven by his cousin, with two young children riding in the back seat. Bailey and his relatives were victims of a drive-by attack, as an unknown shooter pulled up to their vehicle and began firing shots.
According to NFL.com’s Mike Silver and various subsequent media reports, Bailey suffered two shots to the head and another to his hip during the incident, and he will undergo surgery in the morning. Bailey’s injuries are not considered to be life-threatening. According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, Bailey’s cousin was seriously injured while shielding the children from the attack, and his outlook is much more severe.
The 25-year-old Bailey is in the third week of a four-week suspension for a violation of the NFL’s substance abuse policy. Prior to his suspension, Bailey had 12 receptions for 182 yards and a touchdown, and he also served on occasion as an extremely valuable member of the Rams’ kickoff and punt coverage teams. Currently in his third NFL season, the former third-rounder has 59 career receptions for 843 yards and two TDs.
Well wishes from fellow NFL players began to circulate on Twitter late Tuesday evening:
Bailey is the father to a three-year-old son, Stedman Jr. It’s unknown whether his young son was one of the back seat passengers, or if he was even anywhere near when the incident occurred.
More info is expected to be announced by the Rams early on Wednesday morning.
