Yadier Molina Diagnosed with Thumb Tear
By Nic Moody
The Cardinals will be with out their grand star for a while.
St Louis Cardinals fans might be forced to hit the panic button on their season. Yadier Molina has been diagnosed with a torn ligament in his thumb and his season is now in doubt. Molina suffered the injury during the eighth inning of yesterdays game against the Cubs, when the Cardinals turned a double play that involved a slide at home. As soon as contact was made, Molina immediately clenched his left hand. Molina finished the inning but was replaced in the ninth.

The Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak made a statement on Monday that he is “optimistic” that Yadier Molina will play again this season, but for the time being, they will option to keep Molina out for five to seven days and re-evaluate him after that to judge his status on returning this season. Molina spent time last year on the disabled list for a similar injury.
This would be a huge blow to the Cardinals organization. In fact, it very well could be the dagger in their season if Molina is unable to return. Molina is a solid hitter, with multiple platinum glove awards to his name, but the most important aspect that will be missed is his baseball I.Q. Molina knows the game, and he knows his pitchers well. There isn’t a single pitcher in the Cardinals organization that doesn’t fully trust Molina. Most would probably trust him with their lives, even.

The Cardinals will rely on Tony Cruz for now, with Travis Tartamella being called up for the backup role. Cruz is a great backup option, but it’s hard to replace the best catcher in baseball. It does help however, that manager Mike Matheny happened to be a catcher himself in his glory days, so he knows the position well enough to pass on a few old tricks.
Molina is batting .270 this season with 63 runs batted in.
All Cardinal fans can do is hope and pray that Molina can return. If Molina gets clearance from doctors to play, then you can fully count on him playing. We won’t know anything on his status to return for another week, but when we do, we will have the updates for you.
