Adam Wainwright Cleared to Pitch as a Reliever

Cardinals fans can sigh a small relief…

St Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright has been cleared to return as a relief pitcher this season. This is huge news for the Cardinals after the struggles they have had over the last few weeks, especially in the bullpen. Wainwright tore his Achilles earlier this year in April after stepping weirdly out of the batter’s box.

The Cardinals have a good starting rotation in place that boasts a league-best 2.92 ERA. So Wainwright is a welcome addition to a bullpen that cannot seem to find the strike zone of late, as we watched three batters get walked (including one with the bases loaded) in the eighth inning of yesterday’s win against the Cubs. Wainwright was an essential piece in the bullpen in 2006 when the Cardinals won the World Series. In fact, Wainwright recorded the final out that season.

Wainwright has been throwing in bullpen sessions over the last few months, so hopefully he can get back up to speed as the season comes to a close in late September. If Wainwright can come back up to speed as the post-season starts, the Cardinals have five capable starters with an additional starter in the bullpen as backup, which could be the key to another World Series Title.
