The Rams Very Well Could be in First Place After Week Two
By Nic Moody
The St Louis Rams might lead the division on Monday.
It’s a crazy thing to wonder as a Rams fan. The Rams have not held the lead in the NFC West in many years. The NFC West is regarded as one of the toughest divisions in football, with three of the four teams getting 10 wins or more in 2013. Granted, the division isn’t as tough as it was two years ago, but it is still a very tough division. The Rams have been at the bottom of that division for a few years now, and even though it’s only week two, the Rams have a legitimate shot at being the sole leader after Sunday.
The Rams made a huge splash in the NFL by defeating Seattle in the home opener 34-31. It was the most points that a team has scored against Seattle since 2011, and earned two Rams players “player of the week” honors. Now the Rams will head to Washington to take on the Redskins, which is a game they should win on paper. The Rams will have their hands full with Washington, but the rest of the NFC West will also be facing some tough matchups. The Seattle Seahawks travel to Green Bay to take on the Packers, which is never an easy win (almost impossible actually), meaning there is a solid chance the Seahawks will start the season 0-2.

Either way though, the Seahawks will only be at 1-1 at best, so it’s the other two teams that Rams fans hope have a stressful day. The Arizona Cardinals edged a victory out against a gutted Saints team last weekend, and now travel to Chicago to face the Bears. The Bears proved they can still play tough last week when they kept up with the Green Bay Packers for most of the game. Chicago is another place that is tough to play in, so it will not be an easy day for Arizona.
Then there is San Francisco, who has the pleasure of taking on the Pittsburgh Steelers in their city of steel. The 49ers had a massive rush attack last week against the Vikings, but one would think that Carlos Hyde will have a tougher time running against that Steeler defense. It will be an extremely tough game for them as they take on a Steelers offense that almost kept up with Tom Brady.
So with all the games being played by the NFC West, it becomes obvious that if the Rams can win against Washington on Sunday, they will have a legitimate shot at being the sole leader of the NFC West at 2-0. That is of course if the Cardinals and Niners lose. Even though it is all speculation, and there are definitely more important matters to think about, it’s still exciting to think the Rams could be in first place, and gives Rams fans a healthy supply of things to root for.
