Adam Wainwright to Meet With Doctors Monday
By Nic Moody
The St Louis Cardinals might get their ace back before the season ends.
Adam Wainwright is a wonderful pitcher, and it’s a great scenario to wonder what the Cardinals season would have been like had he not gone down with an Achilles injury so early in the year. There is a strong possibility the Cardinals would already be at 100 wins. Alas, we will never know. There is some good news, however. Wainwright will meet with doctors Monday to determine if he is eligible to return this season.
Wainwright tore his Achilles on April 25th, when he took his first step out of the batter’s box. The Cardinals have done a fine job of replacing him for the time being, but there is no doubt that Wainwright’s presence has been missed. If Wainwright gets clearance to play this year again, he will likely be thrown into the rotation right when the post-season begins, which would be a huge gain for a team that has struggled over the last couple of weeks.

Wainwright has been throwing off of the mound for a little while now, but the Cardinals do not want to risk anything huge with a decent rotation already in place. Sure Adam can throw, but the Cardinals also want to know if he can run down the first base line comfortably. They also want to know if he can field his position without stressing the tendon. If Wainwright passes, he will get a chance to pitch in the playoffs.
The Cardinals could also bring him in slowly. Using Wainwright as a bullpen option to start October isn’t out of the realm. Throwing him into the ace role immediately could be a lot riskier than working him in slowly.
We will let you know what the verdict is as soon as the doctor visit happens Monday.
