Two Rams Players Win Player of the Week Honors
By Nic Moody
The St Louis Rams performance on Sunday did not go unnoticed.
If the 34-31 win over the division rival Seattle Seahawks didn’t excite you enough, here is plenty more to justify that. The NFL announced Wednesday that two Rams players had won player of the week honors. Aaron Donald earned NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors after his eleven tackles (film) and two sacks. Donald absolutely destroyed the Seattle offensive line the entire game, and has rightfully earned this honor. The other award goes to Tavon Austin for Special Teams Player of the Week. Tavon earned the honor after his impressive 75-yard touchdown punt return.
Aaron Donald had three tackles for loss on Sunday, with the biggest one being where he put the finishing touches on a tackle started by fellow defensive lineman Michael Brockers to stop Marshawn Lynch on fourth down. Jeff Fisher had the following to say in the post-game interview:
"““99 (Donald) in the backfield. Like I said, if you put one guy on him, you’re asking for trouble. 99 is a special player. There’s no limit for him if he realizes the true potential he has to be a great player.”"
Donald had a monster game Sunday, so expect him to follow up with another great performance Sunday against the Redskins. Aaron Donald won Defensive Rookie of the Year honors last season, so now he will set his sights on the real prize: Defensive Player of the Year.
Tavon Austin has been here before, in fact a couple of times. He earned Special Teams Player of the Week honors against the Colts two seasons ago and last year against the Washington Redskins. Tavon returned a punt for a 75 yard touchdown Sunday, and it was a beauty. Austin broke for the hole, followed some key blocks, and then hugged the sideline as he ran through the end zone. Austin also had a 16 yard touchdown run in the game.
