St Louis Rams Defeat Seattle Seahawks 34-31 In Overtime

The St Louis Rams pulled off an upset in dramatic fashion.

The St Louis Rams were an underdog coming into Sundays match-up against the division rival Seahawks. Some predicted an upset would occur, (including myself) and that is exactly what Rams fans were treated to late Sunday afternoon. The Rams had to come from behind and even take it into overtime to accomplish it, but the Rams are 1-0 for only the third time in ten years.

The Rams began the game on defense, forcing Seattle to punt on a drive that looked promising, but was called back due to penalties. The Rams would respond with a loss of nine on their first play. Then would follow up with a two yard loss on a hand-off to Benny Cunningham. The Rams were forced to punt out of their own endzone, in which Seattle rookie Tyler Lockett would return for a 57 yard touchdown.

The Rams would respond though. After a couple of big plays, Nick Foles handed the ball off to Tavon Austin, who bounced to the outside and scored a 16 yard touchdown that would tie the game at seven. The Rams defense continued to play tough, and the Rams would kick a field goal to go up by three, but would be matched by Seattle at the end of the first half to tie the game at ten.

The game continued to flip flop back and forth until Tavon Austin would return a punt for a 75 yard touchdown, giving the Rams a 24-13 lead in the late third quarter. The fourth quarter is where the Rams would once again struggle. After a big screen play to Benny Cunningham, Isaiah Pead would fumble the ball in Seahawk territory, and give Seattle the ball back. The Seahawks would tie the game at 24 apiece. On the following drive, the Rams first play from scrimmage would result in a Seahawks touchdown after Nick Foles was sacked and fumbled the ball. Cary Williams with the fumble return touchdown.

The Rams final drive would be crucial. Nick Foles slowly led the team down the field, converting four out of four third downs on the series. Foles would find tight end Lance Kendricks for a 37 yard touchdown that tied the game at 31 with 53 seconds left to play. Seattle would try to move the ball, but after a huge Rams sack, Russell Wilson just took a knee and the game was headed into overtime.

The Rams won the toss, and chose to receive. (of course)The Rams would get great starting field position after the kick-off was mis-kicked by Seattle, resulting in the Rams starting from near mid-field. Nick Foles then dropped a pass on the money to Stedman Bailey who was fully covered by Richard Sherman. The Rams kicked the field goal and turned their efforts over to the defense. The Seahawks marched down the field little by little, but soon found themselves at fourth down with one yard to go. (sound slightly familiar?) The Seahawks did exactly what everyone thought they would, and handed the ball to Marshawn Lynch. Defensive tackle Michael Brockers shoved his man back, which would result in Lynch running into the back of him, forcing Lynch to run back inside where Aaron Donald was waiting for him. Donald wrapped up, the Rams swarmed, the game was over.

Nick Foles went 18-27 for 297 with one touchdown and no interceptions. Hard to ask for much more than that from your new quarterback. (not even mentioning the fourth quarter comeback drive) The Rams rush game was held in check, with Benny Cunningham only averaging 2.8 yards a carry in the game. Jared Cook was a huge highlight for the passing game, as he caught five passes for 85 yards. Aaron Donald impressed a lot, as usual. He had nine tackles, and contributed two sacks. (as did Robert Quinn) The Rams sacked Wilson six times, which is a huge step up from last year where it took them until week six to get that many.

The Rams defense played great against Seattle. Forcing the Seahawks to pass short, immediate throws to prevent sacks. Marshawn Lynch was held in check for the most part, (4.1 average, no touchdowns) and the Rams defense only gave up seventeen points.

  • The crowd was a little lower than usual, at just over 51,000. (not surprising given what has been going on) However, the fans were loud and electric, earning compliments from many Rams players and head coach Jeff Fisher. The dome was the loudest I have heard it in a long time, despite the lack of crowd size.

This is a huge win for St Louis. There are many great takeaways that should excite Rams fans. I will go into more depth in upcoming articles, but the short list is the play of Nick Foles, the consistency of the defense, the offensive coordination, and the ability for the rams to “finish”.
