Cardinals Get Huge Win Against the Cubs

The St Louis Cardinals needed the win last night badly.

The Cardinals struggled heavily in the last two series. In their last seven games, the Cardinals are 2-5, losing important games against two teams they need to beat most. Those teams of course being the Chicago Cubs and the Pittsburgh Pirates, who are gaining ground on the Cardinals in the central division. The Cardinals remain 4.5 games ahead, but with a ten game road trip starting tonight in Cincinnati, they will need to break the slump they are in to keep ahead.

Not only have the Cardinals been losing, but they have been getting blown out. The pitching is hardly lasting into the third and fourth inning in some games, one for example would be the first game against the cubs, where the Cardinals lost 9-0. The Cardinals rely heavily on their pitching, so going into late September sparks a huge need for them to get back on track before the post-season gets here.

The slump is off to a good start of being broken, also. The Cardinals looked like they were going to get swept by the Cubs, but the Cardinals glimpsed back to their prime 2015 form. The Cubs were ahead most of the game 3-1, and the Cardinals offense was once again barren as a August desert. The Crowd was begging for something to cheer for, and the Cardinals would soon oblige. In the bottom of the eighth, Matt Carpenter would get the Cardinals another run with a single to center, making it a one run ballgame. Then came the rookie Stephen Piscotty, who has looked incredible this season.

Piscotty didn’t even need to see a pitch from Cubs pitcher Pedro Strop before taking an outside fastball deep to center field. The ball bounced off the wall and two Cardinals scored. The rest is in the final score, the Cardinals won 4-3, with help once again from one of their many rookie call-ups.

"“It’s definitely good to get that one, you don’t want to get swept by the Cubs. We’re fine. There’s no panic. We did a good job of fighting back.” -Piscotty after the Cardinals 4-3 win yesterday"

This was a huge win for the Cardinals. With the momentum from a come from behind win at home, the Cardinals need to carry every ounce of it with them to Cincinnati to stay ahead in the National League Central.
