Brandon Moss Finding Rhythm in St Louis

St Louis Cardinals outfielder Brandon Moss is beginning to make a lot of people look silly.

When the Cardinals traded for Moss back in late July, there were many fans who were outraged. Moss was hitting a terribly low batting average, despite good power numbers. Here a month later, Moss is beginning to show why the Cardinals liked him so much. Moss has raised in batting average from the .100’s all the way to the low .200’s in just a matter of days. Moss is batting .333 in the last seven days, which is much better than the .217 average he boasted when he first came to St Louis.

Moss is riding a six game hitting streak, and has six RBI’s in the last six games, averaging out to be about a run batted in every game he plays in. Moss finally got his first home run as a Cardinal back on August 27th, and then hit another only three days later against the Giants. Moss hit his biggest home run as a Cardinal in the game earlier tonight, where he showed power by hitting a double off the top of the wall, and a three-run walk-off home run in the ninth inning.

Now granted, Moss is still a boom or bust player. He either strikes out, or hits a ball squarely and rips a single or a ball over the wall. There is still little in between at the moment. That does not matter though, because the Cardinals have a great offense already, and Moss is giving the team what they need, that late power boost with the chance to turn a game around. We probably won’t see Moss as much in October or once Randal Grichuk returns, but Moss is likely now a welcomed member of depth onto a club that has a high chance of a World Series run.

Cardinals fans were mostly upset that Moss was traded for by giving up prospect Rob Kaminsky, who many felt was a great prospect. (actually, he was, numbers do not lie) However, if Moss can continue to play as he has the last seven games, it would provide a huge jump for the Cardinals given the late ride into September and the post-season while the Cardinals wait on their superstars to heal and recover.

The Cardinals wrap up the series against the Nationals tomorrow, and are currently riding a four game winning streak.
