What Tre Mason’s Injury Means For St Louis

St Louis Rams running back Tre Mason looks to have re-injured his hamstring.

Mason made a cut in the third preseason game that looked to be awkward when first watched. After the play was over, Mason walked over to the sideline and would sit out the remainder of the game. After the game was over, Jeff Fisher said he hopes for Mason back by week one and that Mason is “a quick healer”. Most fans have learned by now that Fisher throws his share of smoke-screens, so there are a lot of options on how Mason’s injury will play out.

It could be a smoke screen to make Seattle look at Benny Cunningham more closely, or even someone further down the depth chart. It’s also a possibility that Fisher isn’t fibbing, and he isn’t really sure if the injury will be healed in time.

But what about the third possibility? This one is a little far fetched, but Rams fans need something to hope for, right? I also believe that Fisher could be planning to release Todd Gurley in the opener against Seattle, using all the Mason talk as a smoke screen to throw off Pete Carroll. Fisher has made it clear that Gurley will not be used in the preseason, and won’t even let him dress in the games. So is it really crazy that maybe Fisher is hoping to catch the Seahawks off guard and unleash their ultimate weapon? There is still plenty of time for the situation to play out, but it is completely possible.

If Mason and Gurley are held out of week one, it won’t go over well for St Louis against Seattle. The offensive line has been playing at a mediocre level at best, and without top running back talent, Cunningham will have to have two backs behind him who will likely earn roster spots. (My guess is Isaiah Pead and Malcolm Brown, with Trey Watts being suspended the first four games) This will test new quarterback Nick Foles to the brim, going against the legion of boom and carrying the team.

Gurley has a fair chance to play, with him being cleared for practice and the progress on his rehabilitated knee. However, St Louis will need Tre Mason back if they plan on letting Gurley sit out for the home opener. Otherwise, St Louis won’t stand a chance against the Seahawks, who have been to the Super Bowl two years in a row.
