St. Louis Cardinals: Which Players Will Join the Roster in September?
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports
Marco Gonzales, LHP
Gonzales, the Cardinals’ first-rounder in 2013, has had a rough season in terms of both injuries and overall performance, so it’s possible that the Cardinals could just tell him to pack it in and rest for a while. However, they really could use more lefthanded depth out of the bullpen for September, especially since Kevin Siegrist has pitched in 64 of the team’s 128 games. Tyler Lyons is a better candidate for that role, but if the Cardinals want to have an extra backup option and boost Gonzales’ confidence going into the offseason, they could bring him up also. Gonzales has definitely shown that he can handle high-pressure relief situations if necessary; he pitched 5.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen during last year’s postseason before having a rough time of it in Game 4 of the NLCS.
