Mizzou Women’s Soccer Starts Off on Good Note
The Missouri Tigers Women’s soccer team started off on a good note this past weekend. The team drew the SMU Mustangs 1-1 on Friday and defeated the TCU Horned Frogs 2-0 on Sunday. During the SMU game, the Tigers were demonstrably the better side. Missouri had 23 shots over the course of the game including 10 shots in the first half. One of those shots went in, with defender Candace Johnson putting a kick from the spot past Shannon Moroney in the 34th minute. However, SMU’s Claire Oates responded early on in the second half; in the 50th minute, Oates headed a Taylor Barg free kick past Kelsey Dorsey to tie it up for good. In the 74th minute, Erin Webb received a yellow. Despite the plethora of chances, the Tigers were only able to score the one goal. If they are to succeed this season, their goal ratio is going to have to improve.
The soccer team did improve that in their match against TCU. Of the 24 shots Missouri took, 15 were on target. The Tigers struck early; Forward Savannah Trujillo sunk a 22-yard attempt in the 18th minute. In the 52nd minute, Reagan Russell put in a shot from the top of the box. The Mizzou defense was dominant, only letting TCU getting four shots off.

Perhaps an equally important part of soccer is discipline. Over the two games, Mizzou only had three offside calls, compared to the five for their opponents. However, the Tigers have had more total fouls than their opponents. The Tigers have had problems with fouls in the past, and Bryan Blitz’s squad will have to watch themselves in order to keep from losing players. Webb’s yellow is the only yellow the team has received.
The next game for the team is at Indiana.
